Character name: Atsushi Nakajima Character canon: Bungou Stray Dogs Canon point: Post ch.57 Physical Description: Here | 170 cm (5'6") | 18 About the Character: There’s a lot that can be said about him.
It’s easiest to say at the start that Atsushi suffered a VERY painful childhood. He was abandoned by his parents at a young age and sent to live at an Orphanage, where life was cruel. Constantly mistreated, abused and tortured over and over, bullied and just made to live through a hellish existence. Most might think that might make someone jaded, cold and harsh, but not him. He gained a strong will and desired to live to spite the Headmaster of the Orphanage, and show him that he wouldn’t just curl up in die.
That didn’t stop him from being a coward initially when danger hit, wanting to run away from situations that scared him, and sometimes he still does. He has an incredibly bad sense of self-esteem due to the way he was raised and has something of a complex when it comes to hearing someone else being called unworthy to live or dictated to live a certain way. His confidence in himself is incredibly low, once even thinking it was best to run away so he could keep others safe and not put them in danger. It doesn’t mean that he’s incapable of standing up, as in severe situations, Atsushi does gain something of a will to fight and stands strong. Such as the time when he first ran into Akutagawa who’d been out for the seven-billion yen bounty on his head, as well as the situations that call for him to help when nobody else can.
He is rather reliable and capable as a person when he needs to, and tends to be really selfless in his need to protect his friends. People who actually care about him. Which means using his ability to protect them when he can, going out of his way to help strangers as he had with rescuing Dazai Osamu from the river and how passionate he was in his attempt to save Kyouka Izumi from being blown up from a bomb strapped to her chest, despite at the time not knowing much about them and saving them on instinct.
Atsushi is someone who’s easily scared, naive and rather simplistic, believing things at face value and was a reason why Kunikida Doppo was reluctant to let Atsushi work with Kenji, another member of the Armed Detective Agency. Unlike his coworkers though, he does seem to have a lot more common sense and is usually very disbelieving of the situations that pop up around them but decides to stick with them. Since doing so, his self-esteem does start building itself up and it’s through his experiences with them that he does show that his confidence is improving. He learns what it means to be strong and demonstrates a value for life and holds a morally sound mind, not able to abandon someone else if he feels like he can do so.
Such as when he was told to abandon Kyouka and refused, instead spending the day with her and letting her actually live properly before taking her to the police station. Even getting angry when during a particularly nasty confrontation with Ryuunosuke Akutagawa, claiming her life only had value when she was killing people and that was it, to which it spurred the will to fight and keep going for Atsushi. Facing him and pushing on despite every brutal injury that was dealt out to him. His self-established goal in life has been to prove his self-worth and saving others, still plagued by his former headmaster and all he’s been through.
He also bears this desire to help those who were once his enemies. Once evidenced with Kyouka but also with Lucy Maud Montgomery, who were moved by his words and actions. He has a kind heart, unfettered by his abuse and seems to try and want to see the good in others but isn’t at all afraid to speak his mind towards others and what he thinks of their actions. Demonstrating this in his numerous confrontations with Akutagawa but also with those in the guild, acting strongly toward people like Francis Fitzgerald and showing his strong will even against others who are stronger than him.
There’s also a smaller part of him that seems mildly obsessed with money somewhat, thanks to his upbringing as he was more than willing to jump at any opportunity to get some. Such as when he first willingly acted as bait for the man-eating tiger after finding out how much it was for it’s reward and when told there was a reward for correctly guessing Dazai’s previous profession, started immediately coming up with so many random guesses in a heartbeat. Same went with him being downtrodden with initially being upset with how much Kyouka was eating the one time he’d taken her out after she was with the ADA, since he had to pay for it. It doesn’t change his desire to help others, putting their safety before his own but it’s obvious as the series progresses, that he relies too much on the tiger to do so.
So he begins to better himself through learning how to fight from Kunikida, but even with this being a factor? Whenever faced with a tight situation, Atsushi tends to believe ‘What would Dazai do?’ and has faith in the man due to his importance he plays in having saved Atsushi from dying on the streets. It’s not as if he can’t think for himself in situations without another’s help, as during the bomb incident where Kyouka was involved, he was left with the conflict of running away, or standing up to fight. Something he did to, despite being injured over and over again and nearly giving up, which was a bad trait of his as he did that time as well as when he faced against Lucy. Believing it was best to run and see if Dazai would be able to come up with a plan to fix the situation, but has started to get stronger without relying on that for the most part. He’s capable of coming up with solutions that could work, as that’s what happened when he was forced to work with Akutagawa during the Virus Outbreak incident following the fall of the Guild which he had a hand in. Despite the two of them don’t get along and argue with one another, they seem to be able to build each other up and pull off some incredible feats of power, as they did during the final fight with Fitzgerald. Even managing to save the city, and something he did twice, managing to escape with this cursed doll that would have caused a lot more harm to the city in Fitzgerald’s hands. Being reckless enough to jump out at such a height, intending to get the doll down to Dazai and he would have been killed upon landing if it wasn’t for utilizing the tiger and accepting it as a part of him.
He is a very truthful young man and has something of a temper when pushed, once pointing out Akutagawa’s flaw of wanting to always kill someone first before considering the situation, saying that was why he was discarded by Dazai when the man left the Mafia. Not that he doesn’t regret it any less, but he won’t stop being blunt and doing what he can to help others; especially those who mean the world to him and takes into consideration what people tell him so he can become a better person.
Close to his most recent point after the virus outbreak situation was handled, he even tells Akutagawa that he’ll let him come after him and try to kill him in six months, but only if he promises to not kill a single person in that time.
Character abilities:
Beast Beneath the Moonlight
Atsushi has a unique ability which allows him to transform into a white tiger. Completely and also partially; from slitted eyes and a tail, tiger forearms and legs with claws to a full-sized giant tiger.
In this form, he has extreme regenerative abilities that allow him to instantly recover from essentially fatal injuries. While in use, it allows him immense speed, strength and durability that he wouldn’t have normally which allows him to hold his own better in a fight. The tiger parts he’s able to manifest are bullet resistant and shown with manifesting the Tiger’s fangs, has shown that the teeth are strong enough to bite through the sturdy metal of a gun.
He’s also proven himself to be a capable fighter to the point of being a natural at close combat but also making moves to better himself by intending to take lessons from Kunikida, as not to rely on the Tiger so much.
It’s also noted even outside of using the tiger’s ability directly, that Atsushi’s able to use it’s sharp sense of smell to pick up on certain things. He’s quite capable of using reasonably good judgment in situations when he needs to, as well.
Inventory: Just the clothes on his back is all he’ll essentially have with him, along with his cellphone.
