Tali's mother managed to kill the woman (maybe), at the cost of her eye. While few people in Miari knew the truth behind the fucking metamaw, and yes, that's what I'm calling it now, Tali's mother knew from reading her dead sister's journals. While she sympathized with the failed rebellion's cause, she also felt that this was a secret worth keeping for the sake of stability, and thus chose not to tell her own daughter this under the pretense of "she's not ready."
After Tali's grandmother died from natural causes a few months later, Tali became more withdrawn and stressed out, as her mother had become increasingly strict. To this day, Tali's a bundle of nerves, excessively formal in situations that don't really call for it and always on edge because of the complexities of court life. While she inherited her father's way with words and ability to recognize the beauty in everything, she had these interests stifled by her mother, who preferred to cultivate more "useful" talents. Part of this was combat training, because like hell is she letting her daughter get killed (a likely prospect, as Tali's stepfather kind of wanted her off so his kids could have a shot at the throne.)
As Tali's biological parents grew apart (mostly prompted by her father's substance abuse issues, growing criticism and distrust of the government, and disgust at how his former lover was treating their daughter), she became increasingly depressed, which hit a low point when her father died. She resents her mother for how controlling she was with Tali, but tends to overlook her late father's sometimes glaring flaws.
When Tali was 16, she was chosen by the Powers That Be to be a Champion. This meant a lifetime of adventure and being away from her mother, so she jumped at the call despite her mother's disappointment. Six other girls were also on the team, but two of the most important ones were Kiita, a girl whose ability involved seeing past illusions (including the one holding their world together), and Nakari, the daughter of the rebel leader Tali's mom killed. That second one was super awkward because Tali also kind of had a crush on this girl, and felt super conflicted over whether to pursue the relationship (and since Nakari was a petty motherfucker, whether she was just being used to spite her mom).
Yeah, a little thing about Tali? She’s often willing to put aside her doubts about a person and overlook very glaring flaws, if it means that someone will be her friend. She was very lonely as a child. Despite everything that Tali's went through, she doesn't outright hate her mother (even if the resentment is there), and she desperately tries to look for the best in everything and everyone.
After a few boss fights and the leader of the team dying, Tali noticed that her friend Nakari was acting a little... odd. As the protag of the game, Nakari had entire moments of spacing out, doing actions without talking, having no memory of periods of hours or even days...because her body was possessed as an avatar of the player. After a particularly intense boss fight with the corrupted glitch ghost of Tali's dead maternal aunt, Kiita decided to confess to Tali the true nature of their world.
Tali, wondering if that had anything to do with her friend/crush's odd behavior, decided to have a little heart to heart... only for Nakari to tell Tali that she had already seen Tali die. Because memories from previous routes/bad ends, you see.
IRL/OOCly, this is about the time where the game would crash on purpose. In universe, Tali remembers blacking out in the inn they were staying at after this talk, only for Nakari to have disappeared entirely by the time she woke up.
And she got warped here at the time she was looking for her friend.
