IC Information
Character name: Soma Cruz
Character canon: Castlevania (game, original canon line)
Canon point: Dawn of Sorrow, endgame (just after Malice fight)
Physical Description: 19 years old, 6'1", ~170 pounds
About the Character: Anyone meeting Soma for the first time will likely note one thing immediately: though a teenager, he carries a seriousness and gravity of someone far older. Some find his mere presence daunting, exacerbated by the fact that smiles only occasionally and then only for those he's close to. He is intelligent and analytical, though at the same time he is vulnerable to moments of naivete due to his age. He tends toward introspection and doesn't speak much compared to other teenage boys (unless he's comfortable with the other person and/or seeking information). Non-humans might get more of a response from him from the outset, as he feels the potential for understanding from such characters. He can be borderline monosyllabic when he first meets new people, but as he becomes more comfortable with them he starts to open up. At first, he can come across as distant, even a bit sarcastic, but it seems to stem from the fact that most people avoid him due to his intimidating presence. He possesses an intense gaze that is difficult to read unless one knows him well. Granted, Soma is rather serious and intense, but beneath the stern, stoic exterior is a kind heart. Soma's friends, particularly his childhood friend Mina Hakuba, are the driving force behind much of what he does. He willingly puts himself in danger when he and Mina are transported to Dracula's castle through an eclipse, fighting his way alone through the entire castle simply to find a way home. He promises his help to those judges worthy, even if he barely knows them, and his judgment about the natures of other people is often uncannily accurate.
Soma is brave and stubborn, though this will also lead him to be reckless. In both his games, he is told not to take certain risks but he does anyway, again with his friends' well-being firmly in mind. He is driven to do good even before awakening to the truth of his power. Even when confronted by enemies who wish to kill him, he does his best to incapacitate rather than kill. He possesses a strong moral code against harming innocents, and the taking of a life under any circumstance is anathema to him. There are two instances in his complete canon where death occurred at his hands. However, the first kill was in self-defense and the person involved had willingly become a monster. The second was unintentional and appears to have been a ruse concocted by the “victim,” whose soul hid in Soma’s body and was later reborn. In both instances, Soma was stricken with sadness at what had happened, though immediately after the first death he began to awaken as Dracula, drawing away some of his attention.
He is not without even more serious flaws than recklessness and naivete, however. His Power of Dominance is a source of uncertainty, even anxiety, for him. The reassurance of his friends is vital to his ability to push past those feelings to protect what is precious to him. In many ways, he can be considered a sort of dark knight. However, even at the time of DoS, he still experiences feelings of uncertainty toward the nature of his powers and his very identity.
With the soul of Dracula lurking within him, Soma has the potential to be darker still. His temper, when it does show, is usually icy cold and very reminiscent of Dracula's callous attitude toward humans. Fortunately, Soma also possesses a long fuse and a clear focus, so losses of temper are few and far between. If pushed to the brink, especially after awakening, he can become truly dangerous. In the bad end route of his DoS, when he believes Mina was murdered right in front of him, he let go of any self-control he had and awakened as Dracula, simply so he could slaughter her killer and bury his pain under darkness. This proves that his love for his friends is as much a weakness as it is a strength, as it proves to be his biggest point of vulnerability.

Also, with his past lives' memories often intruding into his thoughts, he will sometimes enter a sort of trance state where he will slip into other languages or echo the mannerisms of previous incarnations. This happens most often if something triggers a past memory, such as a particular combat situation or witnessing a reminder of specific trauma.
Canon history:
Aria of Sorrow: Soma and Mina are pulled into Dracula's castle through a solar eclipse in 2035. Upon entering the castle, Soma's power of Dominance awakens and he absorbs the souls of monsters trying to attack them. Arikado, an agent of the Church, tells Soma that he needs to reach Dracula's throne in order to find a means of escape from the castle. Reluctantly, Soma traverses the castle, Dominating demons as he goes. On his travels, he meets Hammer, an AWOL soldier turned merchant who sells him supplies, Yoko Belnades, a sorceress who is an agent of the Church like Arikado and a descendant of Sypha Belnades (an ally of Dracula's son Alucard), and J, a mysterious man who seems to have some connection to the sealing of the castle in 1999.
He also encounters Graham Jones, a missionary who at first claims to be there to learn about Dracula. It quickly becomes apparent that Graham is not who he seems, since the man becomes enraged when Soma tells him about his power. The truth is only further solidified when Soma catches Graham trying to murder Yoko in an attempt to stop her from interfering in Graham's plan to become the new incarnation of Dracula. Soma races to the throne room, only to find Graham has beaten him there and is attempting to absorb the chaotic energy of the castle. He calls Soma a thief and tries to kill the boy, first with power channeled through his human form and then in the shape of a huge demonic construct. Still, Soma manages to beat Graham, though the demented man dies from his wounds and the strain of trying to control a power he wasn't meant to have.
That same power then goes to its true master, Soma himself, who buckles under the weight of dark and chaotic energy rushing into him. It triggers a partial awakening in the teenager, bringing knowledge of many lifetimes and a horrific truth: that he is the reincarnation of Dracula. He rages at Arikado for forcing him to take on this burden, but the man tells him it was fated to happen, and that his fate can be averted if Soma faces the source of Chaos and destroys it. Soma heads for the gate to the Chaotic Realm, but is stopped by J, whose true identity is Julius Belmont, the descendant of the Belmont family who defeated Dracula in 1999. His sworn duty is to destroy the Dark Lord and so he fights a reluctant Soma, who only forces the hunter to submit without badly injuring him. Both of them acknowledge that they were holding back in the fight, and Soma asks that if he falls and becomes Dracula, Julius is to kill him. With that promise, Soma enters the Chaotic Realm and faces Chaos in the form of the eclipse itself. Through a long and bitter battle, Soma emerges victorious thanks to the support of his friends bolstering his spirit, and all of the captives spirited away to the castle are returned to the human world.
Dawn of Sorrow: A year has passed, and Soma's powers have gone dormant with no immediate need for them. However a woman named Celia Fortner appears one day and tries to kill Soma by sending demons after him, reawakening Dominance once again. She tells him that, since he refused to become Dracula, he needs to die so that the soul of the Dark Lord can pass to another and be properly awakened. Arikado, Julius, and Yoko go to confront Celia and her cult in their castle, telling Soma to remain behind in safety. Soma, of course, doesn't listen, and goes to deal with the problem himself as he feels it is all his fault. Celia sends two other candidates for Dracula's power after Soma: Dmitrii, who has a form of Dominance that allows him to copy demonic souls used against him, and Dario, a pyrokinetic possessed by a demon.
Though Soma has no intention of taking their lives, Dmitrii apparently dies in their battle and his soul seems to enter Soma's body through Dominance. It has no immediate effect, even when Soma fights and defeats Dario and the demon inside him. Only when Soma enters a sealed chamber in the center of the cult's castle does Dracula's darkness nearly overwhelm him: Celia seems to murder a captive Mina right in front of Soma, whose rage causes his power to overflow. Only a protective talisman given to him by Mina earlier, combined with Arikado's warning, lets Soma regain control before it's too late. "Mina" turns out to be a doppelganger, whose corpse is then possessed by Dmitrii's soul emerging from Soma. The reborn candidate leaves with Celia, and Soma, Julius, and Arikado pursue them to the gates of the Abyss. Julius unseals the Abyss and Soma and Arikado go ahead without him, as Julius is too weakened from using his power to continue.
Arikado beats Soma to where Dmitrii is waiting, but the agent is too late to stop Dmitrii from sacrificing Celia to obtain the power of a "calamitous demon." Arikado is overwhelmed, leaving Soma to face the transforming Dmitrii alone. Dmitrii becomes Menace, a huge demonic creature, and Soma has no choice but to slay the distorted being to prevent it from absorbing any more power. Once again, defeating a being linked to Chaos causes dark energies to swarm to Soma, trying to transform the teenager into Dracula for a third time. By sheer will Soma forces back the chaotic influence, just as the castle begins to crumble around him....

For your participation in the Test Drive, your character also receives the following items of loot;
-> This inch-long crystal, when left to dangle by its chain, throws rainbows around the room without any need for light.
-> A thick blue cloak, sized for a woman of slightly below average height. It'll still fit most anyone (being a cloak) but it might be a little... short.
