Character name: Sunset Shimmer (one name, technically)
Character canon: My Little Pony: Equestria Girls (an offshoot of Friendship is Magic)
Canon point: Following all the most recent shorts
Physical Description: [image] Sunset Shimmer appears like an average teenage girl, maybe 17 years old and slightly shorter than most adults, with the notable exceptions of having noticeably orange skin (amber skin, officially) and bright read hair with unnatural yellow streaks.

"You're supposed to be so smart, but did you ever think that you shouldn't be messing around with things you don't understand?!"

About the Character: Wikia history
Sunset Shimmer was born a unicorn pony in Equestria (in main canon My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.) From there, she was taken in for tutelage under Princess Celestia, the ruler of Equestria and most powerful magic-user, who uses her magic to raise and lower the sun. During her time under Princess Celestia's care, she began to harbor thoughts of grandeur and selfishness. Sunset's attitude caused friction between her and her teacher. To Sunset, she wasn't progressing fast enough, and thought Celestia was holding out on her. After a particularly nasty exchange of words over a magic mirror, Sunset demanded to be made an alicorn, a princess. Celestia, realizing Sunset was too far gone, expelled Sunset... who, instead, fled through the magic mirror into another world.

It was a world of humans, and as such, Sunset Shimmer became human as well. It was also a world without magic, which meant that Sunset had to adapt. She became a student at Canterlot High, where the portal at the other end of the mirror connected to. She amassed social power - manipulating people to gain popularity, followers. She further manipulated the people around her to overcome people who stood in her way, such as breaking up the friendship of students who stood against her. More and more students became afraid of her, and she continued to amass a reputation as a girl who you did not want to cross.

However, that's not to say she was irredeemable. She refused to resort to actual violence, preferring other methods of coercion, threats, or bullying. It's more that her desire for power (and the social standing and acceptance that came with it) led her down darker paths, justified actions in her mind. Being in human world might have been both a blessing and a curse, as popularity in itself was part of what she craved to begin with.

By the time of the first Equestria Girls movie canon, Sunset has integrated herself for a couple years in Canterlot High, and enacts a plan to go back to Equestria, steal a magic artifact, and gain unimaginable power by introducing it to a world without magic of its own. Said artifact ends up belonging to Princess Twilight Sparkle, Celestia's newest student after Sunset Shimmer and one who became a princess on her own. A bunch of stuff happened, mostly Twilight following Sunset back to the human world, and in the end she is defeated by the power of friendship.
"But all I ever done since being here is driving everyone apart. I don't even know the first thing about friendship."

It's when she's offered friendship by the same people (and one pony) that defeated her that she begins to change. Sunset is genuinely remorseful for her past actions, and the pony - er, person - she was underneath her former arrogance and desire for power begins to show itself. That person is a stark contrast to the way Sunset used to act, but not always in the best way. Arrogance turned to a complete lack of confidence following her fall, as most of the students around her now openly shunned her, and she knew that they had every reason to. Her insecurities ate at her until she was given a chance to really make amends, facing off against three sirens who had regained their powers following Sunset introducing magic to the world.

Without her arrogance or insecurities eating at her, Sunset Shimmer's most outstanding quality is obvious; empathy. Sunset has experienced being on the wrong side of things, she's experienced lashing out in anger and frustration. She's also experienced being unwanted, lonely, and scared. She has an excellent framework to relate to others in bad situations, and she always takes the opportunity to see things from other people's point of views, relate to them, and try to help them. She's a font of forgiveness, offering to others what she was once offered by Twilight and her friends. She is, in fact, considered the seventh Element of Harmony in this world, and that element is Empathy. She's uses this empathy, several times in fact, to win over people who might be considered "villains" in her new world, and turn them into new friends instead.
"Take my hand, Twilight. Let me show you there's another way... just like someone once did for me."

The new Sunset - indeed, the Sunset that Celestia first saw in her - is a genuinely good person. She's serious, driven, and reliable, somebody that other people can look to and count on. She tries to help out others when she sees they need help, she does community service, she tries to make others happy. And she takes friendship very seriously - after everything she's been through, after everything she's done, she places incredibly high value on the friendships she's formed with Twilight, Rarity, Applejack, Pinkie, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, and, uh, another Twilight. They're even voted Best Friends in the school yearbook superlatives.

But even after becoming accepted in Canterlot High and shedding her insecurities, a core of anxiety remains in Sunset Shimmer. Her past is never truly behind her 100% - it's in her past, and it doesn't define her, but it remains. It drives her to higher heights and greater action, but it also means that she can't let people down. She's earned back the trust of the people, and the thought of letting them all down is one that doesn't sit well with Sunset, and causes her a lot of stress and anxiety. It doesn't help that almost all of the problems facing her and her new friends are a direct result of her own actions - stealing an Element of Harmony from Princess Twilight introduced magic to her new home, and everything that's followed has stemmed from that magic being introduced. On top of all of that, on top of knowing she's to blame for everything she and her friends are facing, is just the simple fact that they have to face these problems constantly. Sunset is almost hyper-vigilant for new problems because she never knows when one is going to crop up, throw a wrench into her new life.

As it sounds, she's under a lot of pressure, both from herself and from the problems she faces. She tries to hide it, but she's often stressed, or anxious, or both. She's taken steps to address this, but has never quite solved it. And with everything, she sometimes shows a nastier side when she's under stress, or when she's facing a problem that might harm her friends - a reminder of who she was. Examples of this can be seen when she confronts the human world's version of Twilight Sparkle - she's been under stress to figure out how magic is working in this world, and Twilight's experiments with it put Sunset's friends in danger, and she snaps at Twilight, driving her away. That's not the kind of person Sunset wants to be, and she regrets it almost immediately, but the stress and the fact her friends had been in danger overrode that.
"I know there's more that's out there. I know because I've seen it for myself."

She values her new life and her new friends greatly, which is why she gets so worked up about them. But even with that, she still misses her old world sometimes. Her new life is great, but she knows that if she returned to Equestria, she could have parts of her old life back - adventure, magic, quests and tests. She could really help people, ponies, that needed it. It's another thought that plagues her thoughts, sometimes. It adds to her doubts and anxiety - who is she, really? What is she? What is she supposed to do with her life?

Despite this, she fits in exceedingly well into her new world. She did spend years there, and it's to the point where she feels more comfortable as a human than she does a pony. Indeed, when she does get the chance to return to Equestria, she comments on how off it feels (and how much she misses hands.) She fits in as a human and as a teenage girl, now popular for all the right reasons instead of the wrong ones.

But her background as a prodigy and faithful student of Celestia still means that she's incredibly gifted, whether it's as a human or as a unicorn. Sunset is incredibly smart, often falling short only to Twilight Sparkle in terms of raw intellect. But she's also turned that towards a lot more than book smarts - indeed, Sunset complains that she finds studying through books boring, and prefers hands-on learning. With that, she's worked on mastering a huge number of skills that most people don't master, even with their whole lives working with hands as opposed to Sunset's couple years. Guitar, painting, video games, fencing, all sorts of things. With those skills, she's also joined a lot of clubs, helped a lot of people out, and even joined her friends' band, the Rainbooms.

All in all, Sunset has earned her redemption and her element of empathy. She's a good person who did some bad things, and constantly works both to make up for what she did and to ensure nothing like it happens again with somebody else. And with her friends by her side, there's nothing she can't accomplish.

Character abilities:
As a unicorn, which is what she was born as, Sunset has the full gamut of unicorn magic. Telekinesis is the least magic that every unicorn can do, but Sunset was Celestia's personal student, she knows so much more. Teleportation is shown in canon, but we can assume she'd be about Twilight Sparkle's equal in terms of unicorn magic. It can be reasonably assumed that, as a unicorn, she can do things like make magic barriers, transmutations, concussive blasts, charms, etc.
"Girls, we can't just brush these powers aside because it doesn't seem like the ideal time to get them. What if it turns out that they could actually make things better?"

HOWEVER, Sunset is a human. And as a human, she doesn't have any of that. But she does have off-brand magic, a product of when she introduced magic to her new world by stealing a magic artifact from Equestria.

The first way this magic manifested was when she and her friends began to be able to "pony up". While displaying "the truest part of ourselves," the girls (Sunset included) float up in the air and, well, transform, with new outfits, longer hair, and gaining pony ears. It's noted that it's easier to do as a group, but has also been done individually.

Notably, these ponied up forms allows them to harness magic for what is, compared to normal Equestrian magic, both more simple and more powerful - causing magical effects such as beams or countering other magic, usually.

When used together, it also allows them to make giant friendship beams, similar to the Elements of Harmony working together in Equestria. These "friendship beams" tend to be very powerful, but also mostly cleansing or purifying in nature. Think magical girl attack and you got it.

In addition, Sunset's shown the ability to absorb excess magic and... power up, so to speak. She takes on a different form, with huge amounts of magical power and magic wings, called Daydream Shimmer. As Daydream, she can just shoot magic blasts, repair holes in reality, purify things, and presumably more cool magic shit. It's like DBZ up in here.
"When I touched your hand, I could see things. I could understand why you were leaving. My new magic...! This is my new magic! This is incredible!"

With the magic unleashed into the world, seven geodes were created. Just by being near them (within even a couple miles), Sunset (and only Sunset) gains a magical ability tied to her empathy. She now wears this geode in an amulet around her neck.

By touching somebody, Sunset Shimmer gains the ability to hear that person's surface thoughts. If she maintains contact, she also gains the ability to see their memories. It's limited to a couple short "scenes" worth of memories, and seems to what's on their mind the most by default. However, by concentrating on something she wants to know, Sunset can see memories tied to what she's thinking of instead.

There's also an effect where these geodes can be "supercharged" by overuse - using them more makes them more powerful. With the boost in magic power, Sunset can hear thoughts from everybody nearby, and even see their memories, without the ability to turn it off at all.

Permissions post is already up here.

That is everything supernatural that Sunset is gifted with. But she's also gifted with a great deal of intelligence and natural skill. She was Princess Celestia's personal student for a reason. She's shown to be able to keep up with Twilight Sparkle in terms of academics, create and program her own lab equipment for Mad Science, and more.
"I also play guitar."

She also picks up new skills super fast. Despite only having a few years in the human world, as a human, she's mastered a great number of skills, some of them to professional levels.

-She's a member of her school's fencing club. For the school yearbook, she acted as photographer, editor, and committee president.
-She's mastered playing the guitar, as well as singing, enough to play with her friends in the Rainbooms and also oh yeah defeat literal Sirens in a battle of the bands.
-She has a driver's license and even raced in motocross, but beyond that she's fixed a bus, including the welding.
-She's beaten Twilight in chess.
-She's a huge video game nerd.
-She messes around with programming, engineering, and chemistry.
-She paints, draws comics, and does street art, literally earning a name as Flanksy, her world's version of Banksy.

So... yeah. She's a Renaissance Pony.
