Character name: (Jean) Grantaire
Character canon: Les Miserables (2010)
Canon point: Act 2, "The Final Battle"
Physical Description: Although not pretty or handsome (and in fact often described as "inordinately homely"), Grantaire is average in height and build. His physique belies that he's quite athletic for someone who's constantly drinking and slouching. He dresses like he doesn't care about how he looks: it's all ill-fitting and likely stained, if he's even bothered to wear it at all. He's about 27 and 5'6".
About the Character:
Les Miserables is about a period of time in France where the French are . . . attempting to deal with the fallout of the French Revolution. They have a constitutional monarchy now, but they don't have democracy like America does and the people have not risen, as it were.
Born just over a decade after the French Revolution, Grantaire is a thoroughly unimpressive person. A mostly-functional alcoholic who hands out with a group of Revolutionaries known as the "Friends of the ABC," it might surprise people that Grantaire is immensely smart and perceptive when he isn't being deeply melancholic - which is just the nineteenth century way of saying "depressed af" - but he has an unfortunate habit of playing Devil's Advocate and disagreeing with people (mostly Enjolras) simply because he can. He can quote philosophers at the drop of a hat and is quite knowledgeable about politics, but will bring up only the knowledge he has that's most likely to annoy whoever he's speaking to.
Because of his melancholy, however, Grantaire has a nasty habit of pushing and pushing and pushing at people, then getting upset when they finally snap at him. It's like picking at a scab: Grantaire is canonically incapable of using his knowledge to do anything but pick at other people until they snap at him - which, of course, leads to him affirming that he's worthless in a vicious cycle. He drinks partly to combat his depression and partly to make peace with the fact that he feels like the world is so fucked there's nothing to do about it but drink.
It's not "the world sucks, so fuck the world," but "the world sucks and there's nothing to do about it so we'd best come to terms with it." He doescare about what the rest of the revolutionaries believe in, but he also believes that the world is just Like That and there's no getting around it. There's a sense of hopelessness to the way that Grantaire conducts himself, and there's a sense that Grantaire truly believes the things about himself to some extent. Still, when Enjolras says similar things about him, Grantaire is quick to try and prove Enjolras wrong because Grantaire is nothing if not contrary.
Where the rest of the revolutionaries are, perhaps, a bit more optimistic about their ability to change the world, Grantaire is the lone skeptic. Thoroughly cynical as a result of his worldview, it's easy to think that Grantaire believes in nothing but that isn't quite true. He doesn't believe in much, but he does believe in what they're fighting for. Well, perhaps it's better said that Grantaire believes in Enjolras. Not what Enjolras stands for, not what Enjolras speaks about, but Enjolras himself. He needs Enjolras' attention, whether it be good or bad, and Enjolras is the reason he's associated himself with the revolution at all.
In 1832, the Friends of the ABC are preparing for revolution. General Lamarque is dead, which Enjolras believes is the perfect catalyst for the people to rise. The people . . . do not rise, exactly, but they do provide the furniture necesscary for the students to build a barricade. Their plan is that their rebellion will spark a general uprising and overwhelm the French army. That doesn't happen. Instead, Eponine dies and Enjolras is almost killed by a sniper.
Night falls, and Enjolras tells Marius to get some sleep but tells everyone else that they need to be diligent in case the French army attacks. This whole farce frustrates Grantaire, who has been drinking to calm his nerves. If drunk, Grantaire becomes something of a grandstander - he will talk incessantly, trying to pick a fight with someone, anyone. He asks his friends with him on the barricade: "Will the world remember you when you fall? Could it be your death means nothing at all?" because as far as Grantaire is concerned? This whole thing is pointless. Enjolras also tells Grantaire to get some sleep, and they prepare for dawn.
Despite the way he acts on the barricade, Grantaire is one of those people that knows everybody and he can be thought of as being fairly friendly and personable when he's not . . . drunk off his ass. He's a social butterfly, despite being kind of a jerk and despite never feeling very happy anywhere but with the revolutionaries. He puts on a good show of being unaffected and uncaring about horrible shit that's going on around him but it's just that: a show. If he stops pretending like all of this doesn't much matter, then he'll crumble under the weight of it because Grantaire is actually just eight terrible coping mechanisms and a bottle of wine in a waistcoat.
When dawn arrives, Grantaire is asleep while Gavroche dies. While all his friends die, save for Enjolras and Marius. Grantaire wakes to see soldiers about to shoot Enjolras and declares himself a member of the revolution, just before he's shot.
