IC Information

Character name: Edgar Allan Poe
Character canon: Bungou Stray Dogs, Lockdown CRAU
Canon point: Post-talking to the dead on Vivi’s laptop
Physical Description: More or less the same as described here in canon. Only difference is his hair being back in a ponytail now and his eyes are visible.
About the Character:
Poe was defeated six years before canon by fellow detective Edogawa Ranpo in a detective contest. A shy and secluded person, Poe was already bad at making and maintaining friendships. His anxious demeanor and low self-esteem didn’t help in that regard either. It’s no surprise that it wasn’t long before he was completely alone after his defeat. Having left by choice or having been cut out, it didn’t matter. He was alone and not planning on trying friendship again. Poe’s defat caused him to give up on relationships with others entirely and was sent spiraling into a deep depression.

His tendency to obsess and pettiness resulted in him getting back up on his feet eventually, as he found a reason to live in deciding to get revenge on Ranpo for ruining his life. Poe decided to join an American organization known as The Guild in order to one day be able to go to Japan to enact revenge upon Ranpo. He then spent the next six years working on a mystery novel to trap Ranpo in forever using his Ability. Not much is known about what he did during these years, but at some point he became ranked 3rd in The Guild overall as The Architect.

Poe officially enters the story in the midst of a three way war between The Guild, The Port Mafia, and The Armed Detective Agency, Poe sends an challenge letter to an game of deduction to Ranpo. Ranpo accepts and goes to the meeting spot along with Yosano. Poe’s natural tendency for theatrics presents itself as he starts to go into his showboating mode. This doesn’t last long, as his confident state is shattered when Ranpo doesn’t appear to remember him at first. Poe is discouraged by this but proceeds with the challenge anyway. He traps Ranpo and Yosano in the book he spent six years making and eagerly waits for his victory. Poe spends the majority of the time they were in the book on a motive rant, gloating, and showboating with the occasional maniacal laughter. He’s not one to show these qualities around others and prefers to keep it internal, but he’d been planning this for six years and planned to enjoy every single second of it. His good time is interrupted though as Ranpo manages to emerge victorious and he and Yosano escape from the book they were trapped in. Poe is extremely upset by this, but the revelation that Ranpo remembers him shocks him out of it.

This revelation causes Poe to abandon getting revenge and quit The Guild. His hate turns into a strong admiration and he pursues a friendly rivalry with Ranpo. A trust and mutual respect is quickly built up as Poe seeks Ranpo’s help at one point with a favor from Alcott, assisting Ranpo in the fight against the Port Mafia, and most recently assisting Ranpo in locating The Rats in the House of the Dead’s “Evidence Eraser”.
That particular venture turns into solving said “Evidence Eraser”’s murder, which turns out to have been faked by the man himself -Mushitarou Oguri- and the actual murder he committed. Mushitarou was sympathetic though, and was given a second chance by Ranpo in the form of an card to contact the Special Ability Department with. The positive ending to this particular case was cut short by five gunshots from one Nikolai Gogol.

With Oguri abducted and only having time to give Ranpo a warning about not taking the next case the ADA was given, the case ends on a somber note. Things only get worse for the ADA as they are framed for The Angels of Decay’s crimes and are being portrayed by the mass media as criminals. Things have gotten bad for the ADA, but Poe doesn’t have time to panic over their fate, as he is kidnapped and wakes up at Fayflower University.

LOCKDOWN:

Poe had a time at Fayflower alright. He was against making friends at the beginning of it all due to his assumed canonpoint being right after being defeated by Ranpo. He socialized with others to gain their trust for when someone inevitably murdered, but wouldn’t allow himself to admit he was starting to care about them. It was only the combination of his talk with Akira, getting his phone back and finding evidence that he failed to get revenge on Ranpo, and Gogol confirming it that made him decide that he had nothing to lose in opening up again at that point.

So he did. This lead to him getting attached to the majority of the group in one way or another. Of particular note were his attachments to Waver Velvet, Nikolai Gogol, Akira Kurusu, Tsukasa, Terra, and Rebecca. He grew to see Waver as a younger brother; although this was only realized after his murder. Akira was partially responsible for him opening up again in the first place, and someone Poe regarded as trustworthy if reckless. Tsukasa was someone he regarded as one of the more level headed students and Poe grew to desire for him to survive and live the life he was denied as Angra Mainyu. Terra was responsible for Poe realizing he was capable of making friends and had made friends in his time at Fayflower. Rebecca was regarded by Poe as the most level headed adult still alive prior to her death. Poe respected her and regarded Rebecca as a friend. He somehow managed to not loose anyone he actually greatly cared about -sans Viral- until the week of her death. Rebecca’s death and the brutal nature of it shook Poe. The last adults left after that were him, Gogol, and Tess. Out of them, he was the eldest.

That, along with the letter Rebecca left him, prompted Poe to speed up the process of trying to stop being a mess and become a responsible adult. Said process was heavily stymied by the fact both remaining murder cases resulted in the deaths of the two most important people; Waver in case 5, and Gogol in case 6. The fact Waver was killed by Mitarai -who Poe considered a friend- didn’t help matters either. Gogol’s death hit him the hardest though. While they initially started off antagonistic to each other, Poe’s own curiosity led him to try and understand Gogol.
While progress was slow at first, Poe was determined, and ultimately succeeded in his goal.

Along the way though, he grew to care about Gogol, then he admitted they were friends, then best friends, and during the last week realized he had fallen in love at somepoint. It’s not a surprising outcome considering how his CR with Gogol lead to some large developments for him. Things like Poe becoming okay with physical contact, more able and willing to argue, confident, and openly sadistic can all be traced back to their CR.
Said CR was what kept Poe from making more self-destructive choices whenever someone important to him died. Every time he tried to retreat and be alone after someone he cared about died, Gogol went and found him. This grew into a strange routine of comforting and was what kept Poe mostly stable and able to bounce back from the deaths of people he cared about.

It’s unsurprising in that regard that he utterly broke when Gogol was executed during the final player trial; right after he confessed his feelings. It took a combination of Tsukasa, Vivi, and Terra talking to him to stabilize Poe enough to pull out of the state he was in and soldier on. A talk with Gogol via the computer lab and confirmation of their feelings being mutual greatly helped with this as well.

So Poe soldiered on as the last remaining adult apprentice. Near the end, he learned that Monika didn’t have anywhere to go. Her world was gone, Poe regarded her fondly in the first place, and he wanted to see what she would write one day. This lead to him deciding to adopt her, as Integrating her into his world with the least amount of questions would be easiest if she was legally listed as his adopted daughter. Monika accepted, and Poe has become determined to be a good dad.

He escaped the college as it was destroyed with the other survivors and was reunited with Karl -his pet raccoon- along the way. They settled into an abandoned hotel as their new base and begun preparing for a resistance after chatting with the dead again.

Character abilities:

Black Cat In The Rue Morgue - Poe’s Ability isn’t great for combat like many others, but it’s extremely versatile when used right. It transports the reader into the setting of any novel, but it must be the one they are currently reading. Poe primarily uses it with his own writing, so expect to have to solve the mystery of the story you are trapped in if you want to escape.

Detective – He’s proficient in all the things that come with being a detective and while not a prodigy like Ranpo, His intelligence and eye for detail help him keep up and he’s able to be a few steps behind him most of the time. Ranpo did say he was the only one who ever challenged him for a reason.
Writing - He does seem to make pretty good money off his writing, and he did manage to write a mystery that almost stumped Ranpo. Based on how fast he got the novel he trapped Chuuya in to Ranpo, he’s also quite a fast writer. At least when writer’s block isn’t happening.

Determination – If Poe decides to dedicate himself to something, then he is going all in with everything he’s got. A fully dedicated Poe is going to get whatever he’s decided to do done no matter how long it takes or what he must do. The only real way to stop him is for circumstances to change or for himself to decide to stop.

Inventory:

Karl- Beloved pet raccoon. Has recently gained a dislike for clowns.
Backpack of Mementos- Full of things that belonged to people important to Poe that died. He tends to keep it on him as he didn’t want to be unprepared if the Administration ever found the survivors. Every pocket on this thing has been utilized and meticulously packed to maximize it’s carrying capacity. It’s not paranoid, it’s prepared. It contains the following:
o Nikolai Crowgol and Edgaraven Allan Poe- The former is a white raven puppet made by Nikolai Gogol and left behind for Poe. The latter is a far better made black raven puppet Poe commissioned from Tsukasa afterward. It only felt right for them to match. They are in the front storage area of the bag.
o Clown Penguin- A rainbow colored tragic keepsake. Late birthday/apology gift he gave to Gogol. Poe is embarrassed to be seen with it but doesn’t have the heart to leave it behind. It is hidden at the bottom of the bag.
o Notebooks full of death traps- Sometimes your other tragic keepsake is all those death trap schematics your dead murder clown boyfriend made and you plan to brutally murder the ones responsible with. At least they’ve been tided up and neatly organized.
o Literature he wrote at Fayflower- It’s mostly a bunch of short stories, but there are two novels -the one he had Rebecca edit and the one he wrote to make Gogol admit he was a good writer- and one in-progress draft among them. The draft appears to be about an office worker… and is still in the early stages.
o Taser- Good for zapping. Has only been used once, but it was extremely satisfactory.
o Viral’s Mini Robots- All three of them. Model Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren regained, Model Enki given, and Model Gurren-Lagann looted after he gave it to Rebecca and then she died. That one is a double tragic keepsake giant robot now.
o Plush Cat- A black plush cat that Osomatsu won for Poe after Waver’s death to try and comfort him. Named Velvet after Waver…. Not that he’s told anyone. It’d be embarrassing.
o Tablet- Tablet he was given as an apprentice. Full of notes and pictures for evidence. He keeps in on him out of habit.
o His Flip Cellphone- Never leave home without it.
o Pocket Knife – For if self-defense just doesn’t cut it

A talk with Gogol via the computer lab and confirmation of their feelings being mutual greatly helped with this as well. Even if his secondary goal was still seeing the violent destruction of the Administration.

So, Poe soldiered on as the last remaining adult apprentice. Near the end, he learned that Monika didn’t have anywhere to go. In-Depth Personality:

Poe in canon is extremely shy around others and his confidence and self-esteem aren’t the greatest; especially after his first defeat by Ranpo. He got better after the second one, but not by much. This tended to manifest in him often talking too quietly and mumbling a lot. Overall, he was a lonely and shy person who was just starting to try making friends again after 6 hateful and depressed years spent on a failed revenge plot.

This has mostly been worked through during his time in Fayflower. He’s still shy and his social skills are still rusty in some areas, but he’s far more willing to actively socialize with others and speak his opinion after all he went through. Turns out being trapped in a small space with no way to avoid other people really forces you to learn proper social skills.

Said social skills are where his development shines the most. While he’d still prefer being alone and writing, Poe no longer tries to actively avoid social situations anymore and is not-beyond making dark humored jokes and teasing others now too. He’s even picked up some sarcastic tendencies in dealing with the ridiculousness of the things he’s heard about. Poe also doesn’t completely hide his more sadistic and spiteful side around others either anymore. He’s more willing to consider violence a more valid answer now, even If it’s not his first resort. Both latter developments can be mostly blamed on Gogol encouraging the sadistic tendencies Poe showed mostly pre-second defeat by Ranpo.

The biggest change though, is him becoming acclimated to and more comfortable with physical contact with others. Poe no longer shys away as much from it, even if it still takes him a few moments to respond to it. He’s even willing to initiate physical contact with others now. Overall, He’s become braver -and perhaps more reckless- and isn’t going to crumple to yelling anymore and instead actively argue with others now. Also, while his self-esteem still isn’t the greatest, it’s started to stabilize as he’s started trying to be less of a depressed mess. Even if that’s still a work and progress and he’s still a major pessimist.

One thing that hasn’t changed about him though, is his capacity for extreme determination. Perhaps obsessively so. If he decides something is going to get done or that he’s going to do something, it will be pursued. A Poe who truly devotes himself to a goal is a Poe who will only be stopped in his goal by either him changing his mind due to a change in circumstances or utter defeat. The latter is only a temporary stop though. Poe thrives off adversity and spite.

Another thing that hasn’t changed either is Poe’s capriciousness. He can change moods rather fast. A good example of this is his showboating mode. When confident about something and feeling in control of a situation, he tends to start showboating. However, while he may be confident one moment, he can be sulking the next after one bad comment. This has become more stabilized after Fayflower and his decision to try to be a responsible adult. So, the usual maniacal laughter when things go his way is going to be restricted to only around certain people.
