Yoosung Kim | Mystic Messenger | Lockdown CRAU
Player name: Des
Player age and gender: 31/f
Player Contact:
Any other characters in game? Nope!
cw: abuse, spoilers for Mystic Messenger, Yoosung route, spoiler for Lockdown's graveyard
Character name: Yoosung Kim
Character canon: Mystic Messenger
Canon point: Yoosung Route, Bad Story Ending 3 (canon) + After creating the new city and everything in the rebooted version of the simulation (Lockdown CRAU.)
Physical Description: Yoosung is a young man of 20 years of international age (though he's legally 21 in Korea.) He has bleached blonde hair that sticks out all over the place and is tied off to the side with a barrette. He has wide eyes that are pinkish-purple. His height is 168 centimeters (about 5'6) and his weight is 68 kg (149 lbs.) He is not very physically fit as he loathes exercise, but pretty average. He has a huge number of scars on his body, which he tends to cover by dressing conservatively with long sleeves. He'll be appearing in Phanrift wearing the glasses and modified school uniform in his inventory, but otherwise the clothes he prefers tend to be more casual such as hoodies.
About the Character:
First, let me link his Lockdown app for you to peruse, as it will have more straight-from-canon personality details than I think I'm going to be able to fit in with all the game history I'm going to have to cover. With that said, here goes.
Yoosung woke up on a desk in Fayflower with his worries reset to the petty ones of his college days (for example, he immediately started crying over being kidnapped ... to a place with no internet.) In an alleged test of each of their heroism, the Prospects were made to suffer their worst memories being played in their heads nonstop. He was very worried about what would happen if his roommate's obvious repression stopped being effective, though, so he avoided sleeping in his room.... or at all. Vivi had supplied him with enough laptops for everyone to play LOLOL with, so he spent that week doing nothing but playing the game and trying to distract himself. Yoosung confessed his fears to Mishima with frank pessimism that someone would snap. Mishima was a kindred spirit - he never once thought he would be talking to that someone.
But Jake Peralta did, and he was right - on request of his willing victim, Sherlock Holmes. Yoosung was beside himself as Mishima started to demand that others scapegoat for his sake, as the hero who did it to help them. When he pressed him in his disbelief, Mishima brought up Yoosung's suffering in his defense of why he did it, and this shook him to his core. Rather than get angry at his trust being perverted like that, he just felt like a failure for burdening his junior, a useless adult. It was a guilt he would carry with him for months, but in that moment, he could only press on to talk Mishima down so they could all figure something out. He believed he was tricked, but once he learned the extent that Sherlock planned the murder, he started to truly think of him as the "culprit" of an assisted suicide. With his feelings on Rika's suicide nourishing his seeds of resentment toward Holmes, and on the other side, the light of hope that they could all rescue his mislead friend, he began to push strongly for the group to vote for Holmes as the true culprit. This hope built up as everyone stood behind the plan, including Henry - whom he was sure would want to see a bloody execution. But then it crashed, as Vivienne refused to add him to the suspect list and insisted on trying to save him her way, sacrificing herself, saying it was the only way that the others would not get hurt instead. Desperate once again not to lose anyone else, Yoosung refused to accept this, willing to die trying as he felt he had no future.
It was Mishima who talked him down, reminded him he had other things to live for, and convinced him to vote. Vivienne then scrambled the votes herself, causing herself to get punished, and then after a brief fight with the robots as they tried to protect him, Mishima was executed anyway. To an average Joe like Yoosung, this was the cruelest thing he had ever seen in his life. The subsequent twee pizza party waiting for them looked like the pit of hell. The rest of the Entrance Exam was a blur of even more random and cruel executions, solidifying Yoosung's hatred of Vivenne's Boss, Oswald Hale, until eventually it all just stopped and he was shuttled off to stay in a place called the Magenta House for a summer vacation with just a handful of the survivors. Yoosung could never help but cling to his grief, though, and this time was no exception. He was determined to never let it go.
By the time the real "semester" began, two months had passed and they had all become very familiar with each other. It was pretty uneventful, though, and not exactly great for him. He fell back on his old habits, if it were possible, even harder than before. Such that he actually managed to sleep through it when Oswald put everyone on the bus back to school, and he had to be escorted there several days later. He found himself in the awkward position of most people who didn't already know him thinking of him as "the new kid." The guilt he'd internalized from failing Mishima compelled him to try and focus on taking care of others instead of burdening them, and to find clues and be useful, but as he never found any way to either of those things, he mostly was sensitive and depressed. He enjoyed the company of his established friends, talked to Henry and Terra about love, stayed determined in the meetings and proliferated the information from his past experiences in Fayflower. He also tried to get to know his hall neighbor Viral and assist him in his attempts to explore the school.
Regardless, for the most part he made no friends among the new students - his other neighbor, Grantaire, directly contrasted the two of them in terms of innate ability which made Yoosung sulk and try to ignore him. He took an even bigger blow to his confidence when he met Mitarai in the supply room and had his attempts at helpful advice directly shot down and dismissed as pointless meddling. He wound up staying up late by himself, as did Grantaire, who caught him on his way back inside his room and strangled him - though Yoosung struggled as hard as he could, but in the end died knowing nothing about his killer.
It would be bad enough waking up in the "afterlife" with all of his regrets, resolutions to become stronger so completely unfulfilled as to have never even truly begun. But his memories came back next, leaving him a mess of confusion and tears. It was too difficult for him to reconcile the fresh memories from him being so thoroughly broken he'd rather starve to death, with his recycled past self that had struggled so hard for his life and the life of his friends, two extremes to waver between. When Mishima actually showed up before him, it tipped the scale. Catching up with him was an emotional roller-coaster of guilt and regret, and he even confided what he had remembered. They were able to bring each other comfort and even purpose, deciding to form an actual "organization" dedicated to being a safe space for victims.
Inspired by both the Phantom Thieves and Yoosung's do-gooder LOLOL guild, they combined the two concepts into the "Phantom Guild" and made it their project. Now that they had something to be dedicated to, they were able to hold their heads high. They were sort of all-talk though, so it was both fortunate and unfortunate that no one ever really died who needed them. Even so, they were still able to get some stuff done, like turning The Enemy's office into a cool hangout where they could throw darts at the Administration's faces, uncovering more of the friendly AI to investigate in the future, and throwing birthday parties.
There was a bit of a shift in Yoosung's character toward the middle-end of their time in the simulation. When Connor was killed, he brought with him information that their afterlife was really a computer simulation. This news caused Yoosung to have a minor mental breakdown, as some of his craziest fits of paranoia from suspecting V involved the thought that he and everyone else in the RFA had been turned into programmed robots by V and Seven, coupled with the mind-bending nature of the motives in the killing exams leading him to wonder if everyone in Fayflower was being programmed similarly to his delusions. Even his new initiative to make meals for everyone the way the cafeteria did when they were alive seemed like a joke in the light of this new information, and he persisted as a last act of affirmation of his human existence. But since nothing could change what he had now become, he forced himself to accept being AI as well, move forward, and after attending Connor's introduction classes for adjusting to AI life, embrace it.
As a result, he now has a complicated relationship with his own concept of humanity, that made him willing to forsake even more of it if it was for the sake of helping others as a Guild Leader. He eventually took up an unsettling offer the AI overseer, Eve, had proposed to the group - to directly implant their minds with knowledge. Because he was now an AI, Yoosung was insecure about his lack of knowledge when it came to computer science and the field of artificial intelligence. Furthermore, Connor had put ideas in his head about editing the codes that made up their existences. Yoosung wanted to know more about how they could do this, basically thinking like a real gamer aiming to max out his stats, so he asked Eve to give him the knowledge required for this - while she didn't accept that offer, she would allow him to see and understand everyone's codes.
He would still have plenty of human problems the week when they discovered their AI nature.
(To be honest, the rest of this history/personality is going to be about relationships, because not much else was happening in the graveyard.) It turned out his actions in the first few weeks of the semester had more impact than he realized, on Mitarai, who wanted to make amends with him for how he'd treated him despite being there because of committing murder. That became a new complicated relationship for him to manage, and meanwhile he and Mishima were getting even closer. After celebrating Chuseok with the traditional baekseju brought out more of their latent attraction to each other. A week later, Yoosung had the glasses from Eve, which made him far more omniscient than he ever expected - all it ultimately did for Yoosung was make him realize he couldn't wait any longer to talk about his feelings for Mishima, and as soon as he found him, he asked if he would have him, they took turns confessing, and became an official couple.
Shortly after, connections were opened with the living, and from that point on Yoosung mainly showed off his capabilities of appearing to have a leadership role on the internet, well honed from his years of playing a tank in MMO parties. After Mishima sent out a Phantom Thieves-inspired calling card with their own shield symbol and green colors, he conveyed information with the label of the Phantom Guild, finally looking important enough to gain the attention of several living collaborators and never mentioning to them that the guild only ever managed to get four members. From them, he learned the state of things on the living side and conveyed their own position within the simulation, as well as offering support in their upcoming investigation of the spy within their ranks, the Teacher's Assistant. This communication also allowed the dead to share in the chaos when Akira appeared to die in a bus explosion, casting suspicion on his entire role. As he was a friend to both leaders of the guild, this became another battle with depression in which Yoosung put his all into licking his partner's wounds, and met Mitarai's attempts to lighten his load by cooking for everyone in his stead with mixed feelings. When before he could barely function on his own, now Yoosung is motivated by Mishima's love the way he was by his former beloved, and has instead developed a bad habit of trying to burn himself out on his own.
They would never see how that played out though, because that same day, the simulation exploded, leaving to escape into a grey void that they would then have to recreate a world in. With the status quo suddenly thrown out the window, there was nothing else they could do but hang out in their city of fantasy treehouses and hope a plan would emerge.
cw spoilers for Lockdown's graveyard
During Lockdown, he also picked up many abilities related to being an AI within the simulation. Because I was told character's bodies in Phanrift work based on their mental image and expectations, I would like to extrapolate this to assume that it means multiple characters who ID as AI would hypothetically be able to use them among themselves, and therefore I will list them out here.
* Data Transfer: The ability to send and receive information from another AI by touching them. This can be concepts, emotions, and memories.
* Code Analysis: His mind was augmented with all knowledge necessary to understand the highly complex codes used in the Fayflower simulation, particularly those of the AI versions of the dead. This can be extrapolated into an expert understanding of computer codes in general. This also includes the ability to process them instantly rather than reading them at his normal human rate so he can mentally keep up with the immense amount of information given to him through code perception.
* Code Perception: Using a pair of special glasses (that are locked to him), Yoosung can "see" a display of AI codes for those who possess them. This would normally give him data on their entire makeup as a person, so analyzing personality as well as physical, mental and emotional states are all technically possible. For example, scanning the physical would give him an accurate mental picture of anything from heart rate and brain waves to what their skeleton or organs look like. Mental/emotional would basically be like receiving data transfer but indirectly (so I would be willing to nerf that away so that touching is the only kind that works, if these abilities are all deemed legitimate. Yoosung really got way more power from Eve than he bargained for, so he tries his best not to be invasive regardless. This aversion could be the explanation for why it doesn't carry over, but if it's cool carrying over then yanno lol. I doubt it'd work on anyone other than Lockdown Dead since that's the specific code that he learned.)
Inventory:
- The aforementioned special glasses. They're red and fashionable!
- The custom Phantom Guild School Uniform he and Mishima made by palette swapping the clothes available after "AI 102", including a green and gold-trimmed version of the Fayflower male's blazer, a gold version of Mishima's Shujin Academy pants, and a yellow bow tie.
- Fitbit and tablet everyone woke up with in Lockdown Main Game. The fitbit monitors physical data and also contains whatever feature that allowed Vivi to download everyone into the simulation. As laid out in the link, the tablet has the rules, profiles, maps/gps, music, word processor, cookie clicker, photos and camera.

Kitty-Cat Tea Steeper: A little tea steeper for your mug, shaped like a very fat and very charming cat.
Suit of Candy: Dear god. A well-tailored and neatly cut suit, pattered with the loudest and most obnoxious looking candy print you've ever seen. This thing is a sin.
