CANON

  • ~Super Mysterious~ Okay, seriously? He’s a rather chill person... All relaxed and carefree, not really seeming to care about how he’s allegedly lost memory of his talent and having a little more patience with some of the more eccentric people in his class. Usually defaults to smiling, rather friendly, seems reliable.

  • Chill demeanor hides a cold, calculating mind. Brave enough to confront even Monokuma and question the bear’s motives. It’s like he knows things that other people don’t know… But even without the Survivor Perk he’s still pretty good about making logical decisions without going into a panic. In fact, he can be so serious it’s scary.

  • Determined to help others, no matter what. Whether it be ending the killing game or finding his sisters, he won’t give up until he reaches his goals or dies trying. He’d even go as far as sacrifice himself for the sake of others, as he did in the previous killing game.

  • Not exactly romantic. Sure, some people have mistaken him for a playboy, but he’s not in a relationship and not looking for one. He doesn’t really like it when people think he’s some kind of womanizer, probably because it reminds him of his old man? Flirting with him makes him feel very awkward, but he insists it’s not like that. Honest.

  • His big brother instinct makes up for the lack of a love life. He’s the oldest brother in a large, wealthy family with 12 younger step sisters, he will look after his friends and people younger than him and try to keep them safe. That said, there’s only so much childishness he can take from someone clearly his age or older until he tells them to knock it off.

  • Unfortunately, he has a lot of self doubt. Although he doesn’t let it show, he actually worries about his sisters and people close to him, to the point of fearing that his sisters might hate him for getting them lost all over the world. He tends to blame himself for his mistakes and things that go wrong, to the point of thinking of himself as the “Ultimate Useless Older Brother” on occasion. Other than the whole family thing, he’s also actually a bit worried about the holes in his memory, wondering if he could even trust himself or what’s written on that special monopad he got.

  • Tends to hide his problems from others. If he’s in a bad mood, he’ll let you know he doesn’t want to talk and end the conversation. Otherwise, he’ll just put on a friendly face and try not to mention his worries to anyone. It took Saihara a lot of pressuring in the bonus mode to even get Rantaro to talk about losing his sister on a family trip overseas.

  • Though he didn’t realize it in canon, he’s truly the SHSL Adventurer, with an adventurous spirit to match. He’s bravely traveled to plenty of dangerous places before, and would be content to spend his life visiting new places and meeting new people. (Hey, he’d be perfect for going into rifts.)

  • Fun Fact: Growing up around so many girls has made him an expert in feminine things like nail art and cooking.

    LOCKDOWN

  • So, ah. He started off remembering he was the SHSL Adventurer and then slowly remembered what happened in the 53rd Killing Game out of order. Starting with the moment of his death. At this point, he knows everything that happened then, that video he recorded for himself before his memory was wiped, and the moment in the Gym before the Monokubs realized they screwed up and gave everyone their talents/brainwashed everyone. Unfortunately, there’s still a huge gap in his memory where the 52nd Killing Game and possibly his life before Danganronpa should be, but he’s not too worried? Talking to Mitarai the SHSL Animator has convinced him that he’s from Mitarai’s world, where Junko and her mooks held a bunch of killing games and had them televised to further spread despair.

  • In light of learning how he died, he’s resorted to more subtle ways of rebellion. Like, sneaking into the teacher’s office to investigate and posting fliers everywhere in an attempt to draw out the Teacher’s Aide. He hasn’t opened up about his death to many people, but that doesn’t stop him from finding the subject of head trauma uncomfortable and feeling unnerved in places where heavy things could fall on his head or something.

  • Obviously does not trust people running killing games. He knows by now that they can be capable of doing horrible, terrible things to people and errs on the side of caution when dealing with them. However, this is kind of limited to the people actively enjoying the game, like Monokuma or Jim the headmaster. The overseers who are proven to be against the game they’re forced to run, such as Vivienne and Han Young… Those he feels more comfortable around. Still gotta earn his trust though.

  • Finds himself sympathizing with most of the killers since they’re more victims of circumstance pushed to the edge by the game itself. If possible, he wants to find a way to safely get them out of Vivi’s simulation and revive them somehow. Hey, they revived him and a few others for this mess, so why not?

  • Rantaro’s opened up to people he feels has a good head on their shoulders. Since nothing bad has happened to him and he sees these people as close friends, he’s starting to shake off the habit of bottling up his problems. That being said, he doesn’t like to bring them up in public unless he’s 100% sure everyone has to know… Which is rare. Extremely rare.

  • Unlike Mitarai, Rantaro’s realized that the world is not as simple as “black or white” or “hope vs despair.” Rather, he’s come to an understanding that life is more like shades of gray, and nothing in life is quite that simple. That’s one reason he doesn’t outright hate people for making mistakes or having faulty beliefs… Like Mitarai himself. Yeah, Rantaro’s worried about him too, and hopes he’ll learn to be a better person in deadland if nothing else can be done.

  • Rantaro is now pretty much against using mind control to make people do what you want. He wasn’t happy to find out Mitarai knows how to do that through anime, and Rantaro’s pretty certain the administration was using mind alteration for some of the motives, removing people’s memories, and maybe even the whole “Hijacking virus” that seems to possess anyone who gets to close to it to do awful things. However, Rantaro won’t complain if he absolutely has to use something like mind control as a last resort. He’s kept that Joy Anime Mitarai was working on in case he needed an audio/video distraction for a quick getaway, for instance.

  • After the “lost your senses” motive and getting triggered by Mitari mentioning head trauma as an example in a private discussion, Rantaro decided to take a vow of silence in protest of the administration and as an attempt to keep his words hidden from the security cameras. He told himself he would save his voice for the trials and vocal exercises, but that went out the window when Jim arrived. Rantaro refused to speak in the man’s presence… But by that point he got too used to not speaking and actually lost his voice to disuse in the process. It’s kind of embarrassing knowing that the mutness is 100% his fault, but he’s hoping he can fix that with some practice. In the meantime, he’s been communicating through gestures and writing messages in a notebook to show to people.
