Character name: Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII
Character canon: FFXV: Kingsglaive
Canon point: Approx 2-3 mins before his death. Specifically, as he turns to face Glauca for the final time.
Physical Description: 6ft |
Silver FoxHe's only fifty, though the drain from the crystal makes him appear older and more worn. The King. The Dorkiest Dad.About the Character:
As king he's known as 'His Majesty, King Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII;' as Lucii, he's 'The Father.' These two titles clearly show the roles that have defined Regis his whole life, though he's been forced by circumstance to almost completely neglect one for the other. Most of those who know of him know only the king. The calm, controlled, and stern presence whose magic fuels the Wall that protects Insomnia from the outside world. He is the man who struggles with the Empire's ever bolder attacks, and he's the one who must find some way to balance the needs of the city's populace with the ever increasing number of refugees flooding in from the territories that have been lost. Few know the man who still carries the guilt and grief of the day he had to flee Tenebrae with his injured son while the Oracle's body was still warm on the ground and with the feeling of her daughter's hand slipping from his forever burned into his memory. Fewer still know the anguished father who screamed and sobbed his pain into the night after finding out his son had been born the Chosen King of legend--the one who would bring light and life back to Eos only to lose his own life in the process.
Born as the 113th of his line, there was a lot placed upon Regis' shoulders from the very beginning. The status of Eos' political climate aside, the Lucis Caelum line was tasked long ago with the protection of the Crystal until the day came for the prophecy to be fulfilled. They were allowed to make use of the Crystal's magic, but considering that magic ate away at their very lives, it had to be handled with care and control lest they burn themselves out too quickly. Fortunately, control was something that always came naturally to Regis, even when cruelly goaded by others. A good example of this came during the treaty signing when Emperor Aldercapt repeatedly taunted him. Regis' gaze made it very clear he was angry--enraged even--but he kept himself on a tight leash knowing full well any aggressive action he took would only put himself and Lucis in a worse position than they already were in. This was likely Aldercapt's goal, as there was no love lost between the two and shaking the usually composed Regis would be an added joy atop springing the trap they both know was the true purpose behind the treaty.
That control didn't always work to Regis' benefit, though. The mask he crafted over many years made it easy for people to believe him unfeeling and distant. This was shown through the reactions of the refugees to his acceptance of the treaty. Even those within the Kingsglaive, sworn to protect him, were enraged by the decision. They saw it as a betrayal, an abandonment of their homes to protect one city and one life--his son's. Of course, none of them knew of Noctis' role as the Chosen King, but then again only a few did know. It would put Noctis is far too much danger to allow that information to become widespread before he was ready to take up that mantle. There was much spreading that information may have changed--perhaps even preventing Drautos' betrayal--however that would have placed not only Noctis, but the fate of all of Eos, at risk, and so Regis kept the information quiet and allowed others to think ill of him instead, protecting all he cared for from a distance since fate would not allow him to do so in any other way.
Unfortunately, that was just one time out of the many that Regis had to act to protect his son from a distance. Being the king of a country at war was hard enough, but on top of that, the Crystal was steadily draining his strength and life. Despite his best efforts, one thing or another always seemed to keep him from being able to spend time with his son. Even before Noctis was almost killed by the Marilith, Regis knew the time he had to spend as Noctis' father would be limited. No matter how much he enjoyed the laughter their shared dislike of vegetables caused during meals or the hours of comfortable quiet during fishing trips, there would never be enough time, especially after the death of Noctis' mother. As a result, Regis searched for, and eventually found, a companion for his son in the form of Ignis Scientia, a boy not that much older than Noctis was. Ignis was intelligent, understanding, and most importantly, caring. He couldn't fill the emptiness a father's absence caused, but he could help lessen it.
One of the most questionable ways Regis protected Noctis came once more in the form of keeping secrets. Not only did he not tell Noctis his suspicions about the true purpose of the treaty signing, he never told him the full extent of the Chosen King's duties. His son's life would never truly be his own; it would also be far shorter than it should have been. Regis wanted him to enjoy what little life he would have--to live as normally as a prince could--and that was something he would never have been able to do with such a grim fate hanging over his head. It's easy to believe that Regis didn't trust Noctis with the truth, but Cor made it very clear to Noctis when he met up with the prince and his retinue after the Fall that his father had every faith that he would be able to do what needed to be done in order to fulfill his calling.
Regis, of course, was not about to expect his son do to what needed to be done without doing the same himself. Once the trap was sprung at the treating signing, he fought with all that was in him, despite being in no physical condition to fight any kind of battle. Even having the Ring of the Lucii cut from his hand didn't cause him to back down. It's clear he had no hope of winning against the kind of strength General Glauca wielded, and yet he clashed with the man multiple times, eventually creating a barrier to separate himself from Nyx Ulric and Lady Lunafreya so that they would have a few more minutes to escape with the Ring. He knew, as he turned to face Glauca for the last time, that he was going to die and it was an acceptable loss in order to see the future handed to those who deserved to see it...
...and to make up for all those years that Lunafreya was forced to spend in captivity because fate and prophecy prevented him from being able to stop and save her as well.
Character abilities:
Supernatural:
Warping/Phasing: Warping is a short-range teleportational ability that allows the user to follow after a thrown object (often a weapon). The ability works on line of sight and doesn't allow passage through a solid object. Phasing allows a person to avoid an attack by 'sidestepping' it, leaving an after image behind. Thanks to King's Tale we know that Regis was skilled with both abilities in his youth. Unlike Noctis who is more relaxed in how he goes into his warps-- almost allowing the ability to pull him forward--Regis seems to launch or throw himself into his warps. This style of warping may be partially responsible for the issues he has with his knee later in life.
By the time Kingsglaive comes around, Regis' physical condition has deteriorated enough that we see him use neither skill, though it is assumed that he still could should he have enough time to focus the needed magic and enough reason to do so.
Magic - Curative Creation: Thanks to the magic granted to him, Regis is able to turn drinks into various curative potions. The strength and type of curative depends upon the amount of magic put into it. The type of drink also has some impact on the resulting potion, with drinks like tea, juice, and energy drinks being commonly used while things like water and alcohol being avoided as the first is too simple to hold the magic while the other just doesn't mix well with it.
Magic - Elemental: Regis' magical skills also include being able to summon powerful lighting, fire and frost spells. Unlike Noctis, he isn't shown as needing to store the spells in flasks before use nor does he need to recharge his power from nodes. The draw back is that the magic drains his life and repeated use of the stronger spells will very quickly exhaust him.
From what we see in Kingsglaive, Regis seems to favor using fire and lightning spells over frost spells.
Magic - Protective: Regis is very skilled at creating protective shields that can block both physical and magical attacks. These shields can withstand a great deal of force, which makes them his go to for protection since his own physical strength has declined so much over the years. He can create various shapes and sizes of shields from those meant to protect just himself, to those large enough to protect a whole group, and even those large enough to completely divide a room as shown when he uses one to separate himself and General Glauca from Nyx Ulric and Lady Lunafreya. These barriers can be maintained while he is using other magic if necessary and also while he is mortally wounded as shown by how long the dividing barrier he put up lasted even after he took the fatal blow from Glacua's sword.
While Regis never uses the invisibility spell himself, the members of the Glaive are shown using it in battle. As their magic comes from Regis himself, it is safe to assume this is a spell he has access to, though he would likely see it as too dishonorable to be used in fair combat.
Armiger/Royal Arms: Armiger (storage space): As a storage space, the Armiger is basically Eos' version of hammerspace. While it can't hold anything living due to the fact all that goes into it enters stasis, almost anything else can be stored up to a vague handwave reasonable size. It also serves as storage for the Royal Arms that each of Lucis' kings gather and make use of. While Regis is the 113th king of the line, there are only a few whose locations are still known. These weapons can only we wielded and properly used by the royal family. Summoned together the Royal Arms are used in tandem to attack. This attack is also referred to as the Armiger.
While Regis is seen summoning a large number of weapons from the Armiger during Kingsglaive, he doesn't use them to preform the full Armiger attack, instead defaulting to his own sword to attack or using magic. While this may have begun as personal preference, as he neared the end of his life it likely became necessity because it was so difficult for him to access both the Armiger as an attack and as a storage space. (The Crystal giveth and the Crystal taketh away.) This is why he carries so little within it, keeping only the things he absolutely never wants to be without there.
Ring of the Lucii: While he no longer has the Ring in his possession, should he regain it, Regis would have access to the follow spells in addition to the magic he can already use:
Ability Sharing: Should he choose to, Regis can share several of his abilities with others including allowing their use of his elemental and protective magics, warping, and access to the Armiger as a storage space.
Mundane:
Anti-Skill: FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY DO NOT LET THIS MAN DRIVE A MOTORIZED VEHICLE! He is not a bad driver, per se. What he is is a very RECKLESS driver. It's a miracle the Regalia survived long enough to be passed to Noctis. Seriously. Even with all the holes in the FFXV storyline we know of two times Regis wrecked/seriously damaged the Regalia while driving it. That says A LOT.

Additionally, if you use a secondary journal for icon space or other purposes, please respond to this comment with it so that we can get it included!
For your participation in the Test Drive, your character also receives the following items of loot;
Vermin Orb: An almost opaque glass orb. If you hold it up to the light, you can see things... wriggling inside. No matter how hard you try, it won't ever break open... but by god, why would you want to?!
Prince of Reverie: An elegantly cut tuxedo all in crisp white with a velvet lining of soft pastel rainbow. The fabric is comfortable and always seems to be adrift in a soft breeze.
